One thing we take real pride in at Craigie's is ensuring that we work with small producers and suppliers who are largely based in Scotland and who have a similar ethos to us. This month, we speak to Maclean's Highland Bakery, a fourth generation bakery based in Forres, centrally located between the Highland, Speyside and Grampian regions of Scotland.
How does working with Craigie's support a company like Maclean's Bakery?
"Craigie's is one of Scotland's Premier Farm Shop destinations and we take great pride in having our Scottish products listed in this fantastic site."
If you were at point of sale in Craigie's what would you say to customers about your baked gooods?
"Everything is made here in Scotland. We are a family owned business and take great pride in building our brand within Scotland and beyond. We prefer to work with and supply smaller artisan farm shops such as Craigie's!"
Sum up Maclean's Bakery in a few words?
"We are one of Scotland's best known bakers. We are very well known for our Oatcakes especially the canape style pack but have made terrific inroads with the Maclean Biscuit range - we are always looking to develop new lines. Watch out for our new Haggis Oatcake!"
In 2018, in terms of how people eat, and how they shop (perhaps more locally and regularly), how do you plan your products and plan for future new product ideas? Or do you think the bakery industry is solid enough to sustain the range that you have?
"We believe you have to keep thinking all the time about new initiatives - like anyone else some will work some won't. There is no question healthier eating is very much on parents minds for their children and this is something we feel that we need to focus on going forward. Treats are of course part of everyday enjoyment but there is no doubt that many foods will need to be 'cleaner' and deliver on taste in the future. Consuming excess sugar and how products are packaged is with us now and manufacturers have a responsibility to develop healthier alternatives."
