Edinburgh family farm plants seeds of hope by partnering with homeless charity Bethany Christian Trust! Craigie‚... more
One thing we take real pride in at Craigie's is ensuring that we work with small producers and suppliers who are largely based in Scotland and who have a similar ethos to us. This month, we speak to Olivia of Stoats who have been serving up their porridge since 2004.
Stoats began over 10 years ago with the simple ethos of bringing great tasting oats to the public. Using their own unique blend of Scottish porridge oats not only do they produce boxes of oats they have expanded to create fantastic tasting porridge bars, porridge quick pots, muesli and oatcakes.
With World Porridge Day being celebrated on October 10th we thought this was the perfect opportunity to speak to the oat specialists!
How does working with Craigie's support a company like Stoats?
Craigie's were one of Stoats first customers back in 2007 so we have nearly 10 years of history! This kind of local support in such a great establishment has been invaluable on the journey to where Stoats is now.
If you were at point of sale in Craigie's what would you say to customers about your porridge oats?
Stoats use a unique blend of oats to create tasty and wholesome snack and meal options that provide you with a natural, slow release energy using kitchen cupboard ingredients. The unique blend of oats ensures a texture of fluffiness and bite for the porridge and the traditionally cooked oatcakes are crispy and crunchy."
Are you able to sum up Stoats in a few words?!
Edinburgh based Stoats produce a variety of delicious oaty goodies from boxed porridge and sachets to muesli and oatcakes using the finest natural ingredients.
What challenges (if any) have you faced developing your business in Scotland?
Some Scottish consumers are put off porridge based on their experiences of it as a school meal so they're less inclined to try our wares. We find that when people are prepared to try, they always come back for more and we have the data to prove it. Conversely, Scottish brands receive great assistance from organisations such as Scotland Food & Drink in helping promote our products to export markets - we see a lot of porridge sold to France, Benelux and the Middle East and their consumers look for the highest quality ingredients from around the world, with Scottish oats being regarded as just that.
And finally, as it's World Porridge Day this month what will that mean for you?
World Porridge Day is all about raising awareness and funds for Mary's Meals. The Scottish based charity feed over 1 million hungry children across the world with one meal every school day and it's a privilege that they have chosen Stoats to be the Official Porridge Partners again this year for World Porridge Day. Stoats staff will be sharing their #PorridgeSmiles and encouraging others to get involved as we raise funds and make hungry children smile with porridge.
Thanks to Angus for spending the time speaking to us this month. If you'd like to find out more about Stoats you can visit their website HERE and see below for how they are contributing to the One Meal campaign on World Porridge Day.
