One thing we take real pride in at Craigie's is ensuring that we work with small producers and suppliers who are largely based in Scotland and who have a similar ethos to us. This month, we speak to Angus of Mungoswells.
Mungoswells is situated in East Lothian. They malt some of their barley and wheat and mill their own wheat to make flour. Their products are made from crops grown, harvested, milled and packaged all within 5 miles, resulting in quality local produce with unrivaled traceability.
How does working with Craigie's help your company?
"Our flour fits well with Craigie's ethos in that it is locally produced, traceable back to the field where it grew and has travelled a minimal distance from field to customer. For some reason most of our existing customers in Edinburgh are central or on the east side of the city. We need a suitable outlet to the west and Craigie's Farm Shop is ideal. Additionally, as one of a group of small producers in East Lothian, we are trialling group buying with Craigie's allowing the producers to collaborate on delivery and invoicing
making the whole process much simpler for everyone."
What challenges do you face running your business?
" The biggest challenge is distribution. Getting the flour from the mill at Mungoswells to our customers, whether bakeries or households, at minimum cost and with minimum food mileage is challenging. Then of course, as all farmers would say, there's the weather!"
If you were at point of sale in Craigie's what would you say to potential customers?
" All the wheat we mill is grown on our farm at Mungoswells near Haddington. Once it has been harvested it is dried and stored on the farm until we need it then cleaned and milled to separate the bran (used for animal feed) from the flour. Crushed to a very fine powder this is ideal for bread making or for scones, cakes or biscuits. Only the bran is removed and only the baking powder needed to make self-raising flour is added. Our flour can be distinguished by the tiny specks of bran left in the flour to give it its flavor and this is the healthiest part."
Are you able to sum up your business/products in a few words?!
" It's very special for a farmer to be able to grow a crop, process it and present it to the consumer knowing that we have done it all here on the farm. It's even better when we get complimented on our efforts!"
